Recovering from Trauma
Experiencing difficulties is part of living in the world, but when trauma occurs, a whole different chain of events happen. While a person may believe their reactions are abnormal more often, they are a means of trying to get back to normalcy and a sense of safety...even if the behaviors thoughts, and emotions, continuing to work against a person moving forward. There are a wide range of trauma events including soldiering, being a first responder, a victim of assault - sexual or physical, or bearing witness to the pain of others as in the case of a physician or a nurse. Trauma does not have to be faced alone. Find support. One of the greatest challenge facing the helping professions today is "burnout". Large umber of people are leaving helping professions including police work, the medical field - both doctors and nurses, and I include teachers in the list. The secondary trauma experienced in taking care of the sick, injured, or victimized often leaves people feeling alone, isolated and exhausted. Don't face this alone seek help. It is your best insulation against self harm, leaving a career that you have loved, and continuing to have a positive impact on the world around you.
